Why same day appointments for sick children under 5 years matter.

At Family Health Matters in Glen Innes, we believe that child health is a top priority—and that starts with timely access to care. That’s why we’re proud to offer same-day appointments for unwell children under the age of 5.

Here’s why this matters for whānau in our community:

1. Young Children Can Get Sick Quickly

Children under 5 are especially vulnerable to infections, viruses, and sudden illnesses. What starts as a minor cough in the morning can escalate to a high fever or breathing difficulties by the afternoon.

Offering same-day appointments ensures that:

  • Parents don’t have to wait and worry.

  • Children are seen before things get worse.

  • Early treatment can reduce the need for hospital visits.

2. Reassurance for Parents and Whānau

When your pēpi or toddler is unwell, waiting even one or two days to be seen can feel like forever. Same-day appointments provide:

  • Peace of mind for worried caregivers.

  • Immediate answers and a care plan from a trusted Nurse Practitioner.

  • Support and education for parents on what to watch for.

We know that gut instinct matters, and we respect that parents know when something’s not quite right.

3. Preventing Complications

Timely treatment for common childhood illnesses like:

  • Ear infections

  • Respiratory issues

  • Gastro bugs

  • Fevers

And can help prevent more serious complications, reduce antibiotic use, and ensure quicker recovery times.

4. Reducing Pressure on Emergency Services

By offering same-day care locally, we help keep our children out of hospital emergency departments unless absolutely necessary. That means:

  • Less stress for families

  • Shorter hospital wait times

  • More efficient use of health system resources

5. Strengthening Relationships with Whānau

We want our Glen Innes families to feel confident that Family Health Matters is here when they need us most. Making it easier to see a Nurse Practitioner on the same day builds trust and helps foster long-term, positive healthcare relationships.
